Bosch EDSP: the ready-to-use electric propulsion platform for recreational boats
The innovative Bosch EDSP platform offers boat builders a complete, ready-to-install electric propulsion solution. It primarily consists of three components—motor with transmission, inverter, and electronic control unit—and significantly reduces development time for serial applications, providing manufacturers with a predefined and cost-effective package. It can also be installed as a retrofit.
The era of electrification continues to advance in the yachting sector. Some shipyards have already introduced zero-emission models, mainly motorboats under 10 meters, while many engine makers have announced—or even launched—their first hybrid or fully electric powertrains, such as the new Mercury Avator outboard range (click here to learn more in our article). Now, Bosch introduces its EDSP platform.
The German mobility giant is entering the future of electrified motors by accelerating this transition with a new platform for electric propulsion systems (EDSP), designed for quick and easy integration into boats.
Bosch EDSP: a solution for all electrification needs
The expertise of the German company in developing new technologies within the automotive sector has been instrumental in creating this new platform for yachts and recreational boats, with components and solutions made available to manufacturers in the industry.
As stated by Philip Kurek, Head of Off-Highway and Marine Solutions at Bosch Engineering: "We want to offer boat manufacturers the optimal solution for their needs, whether they require an individual solution or a platform. In addition to use as original equipment, our solutions can also be used to retrofit existing fleets”.
Streamlined process and minimized development costs
As one might imagine, much of the design process for an electric boat falls on the shipyard itself, resulting in high development costs and long timelines, especially considering the relatively low production numbers compared to electric cars.
The new Bosch EDSP platform, however, simplifies integration and provides the nautical industry with a comprehensive electrification solution. The EDSP significantly reduces development times for serial production and offers manufacturers a predefined, cost-effective package that is easy to install on yachts and recreational boats.
Bosch EDSP: complete package or individual components
Depending on the needs of shipyards, Bosch can provide either the entire platform or individual components to be integrated into systems independently.
The Bosch EDSP platform consists of three main elements: the electric motor equipped with transmission, the inverter with a 12V converter and the electronic control unit, which communicates with the plotter and electronic throttles, allowing the system to be adapted to various onboard applications.
Not all electronic throttles are compatible with the system, but Bosch provides a list of all supported models. Similarly, the battery must be high-voltage (400V) and is specified accordingly.
Users will also receive comprehensive documentation, including integration guidelines, a system manual, component specifications, the control unit software, and a startup package.
One of the most interesting aspects is that the system can also be retrofitted to existing applications. Considering that electric powertrains are significantly more compact than gasoline or diesel engines, installation is possible even in tight engine compartments.
In terms of power range, the 400V permanent magnet synchronous electric motors will be available in two versions, delivering 123 hp and 190 hp, respectively.
